Naming Your Small Business Right
By Martin Parks

One might argue what’s in a name as it is hard work and quality offerings that matter in a business. However, when it comes to naming a small business, selecting an appropriate name holds a lot of value. Choosing the right name can work wonders for your small business, but at the same time lack of any effort while choosing a business name can create legal hassles like copyright issues, which can act as a contributing factor in the failure of a business.
Lots in a business name

Choosing a business name requires a little bit of effort as a name should reflect the vision, values, ambitions and aspirations of an entrepreneur towards his/her venture. Small businesses should come up with creative, suitable as well as unique names that will have a positive impact on its clients.

“Given that naming a small enterprise is like giving birth to a brand, small entrepreneurs should be careful while choosing a name. Winning business names does not only help attract attention of clients, but at the same time express the unique selling proposition (USP) of a firm and help in creating a distinct image of your firm, which is different from other competitors in the market,” said Paresh Rajde, founder, managing director and chief executive officer of Suvidha Infoserve, a fast-growing retail firm in Mumbai. Besides, small business owners must take into account legal elements of a business name depending on the form of business one operates.

“While a business name reflects one’s identity, it should be neither too simple nor too complex that it fails to evoke consumer interest. Moreover, one should carefully factor in the legal structure of a company while selecting a name,” said Amit Dutta, proprietor of Color Touch, a small-sized advertising agency in New Delhi.

However, a good business name can develop into a powerful brand if it is backed by an appropriate marketing strategy.

naming a business

Update – The author of the article says “what’s in a name” and Shakespeare said “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”  Well Shakespeare has been dead for a few hundred years and surely never seen a computer.  In today’s word full of business and so much clutter out there a good business name is able to cut through all of that.

A good business name can also get attention and bring you free business.  People as judge your business based on your name as well. If you are a modern computer company you had better have a modern business name and if you are a quilting company with a small local business you should have a corresponding name as well.

Naming you business is very much like naming a baby, because that is exactly what it is.  Once the name is set you’re kind of stuck with it for a very long time.

  1. That would be nice to get free business! I guess if you have a name that really stands out and cuts through the mass of business names people will check it out. I might be dating myself but a interesting name is like naming yourself AAA Something in the phone book so you come to the top of the list.

Cool post and interesting article about company naming.

    • Well an interesting business name can get people talking about your business. If you remember the first time you’ve heard the company name Google, I remember that everyone was just talking about it. Talking about it usually translates to people going to your site and that in-turn into sales and profits.

Your name can’t sell your product but it can get people talking about your business and talking about your site, you and your products have to take it from there.
