How To Name a Business
Naming your business is one of the most important decisions when starting a business and choosing the right name will save you countless time and money. There is nothing worse than having to re-brand and name your business after operating for a few years. Not only may you lose all the good clients and brand equity you’ve been building but you will have to spend hard earned capital on winning back old customers.
To help you get the right name the first time, here are a few tips to consider when asking how to name a business:
Tip #1) You must be able to obtain your business dot-com domain name. This is also the Brandings mantra, “if you can’t obtain the exact dot-com domain name, you have to rename.” Very few businesses will succeed without the dot-com domain these days and particularly if you are dealing with the public in general.
That means every business, ranging from a poultry farmer looking to sell organic eggs at a farmers market to a computer programmer needs to have the exact match to their dot-com domain. Without it you’ll just be sending customers to the wrong site or worse yet to your competitors.
Examples of Powerful Business Names:
Tip #2) Your business name and domain name should be short and clear. The longer the domain and business name the better the chance to misspell the name and send them to the wrong site.
For example “onomonopia” may describe your business perfectly but it is too long and too hard to spell.

I wish that every entrepreneur or business owner would hear our advice, if you’re adding words, hyphens, numbers, whatever to get your domain name, you’re going to lose business. Either people will not find you, or you’ll be directing people to your competitors.
All company naming experts agree the dot-com domain name is the domain name extension for business and your domain name needs to match your company or product name.
