Coming up with a Creative Company Name
Our Brandings team is constantly being asked to create funny, catchy or really creative business names. I think that there can be quite a difference between the three and the type of name really depends on what type of business or company you’ll be starting.
The Brandings Business Name Development Team really loves creative business and product names and we think you should tell us when you see them, and we’ll do the same thing. We also love a good funny and catchy business name when used in the right industry or instance. Funny business names are not good across the board and you should use hesitation when using one.
If you are opening a cleaning service by the sea, a lake or on the coast, for instance, something funny or funny like “A Mermaid” would work. This name is funny and memorable but not stupid and when paired with a cleaver logo, maybe one where the mermaid is holding a feather duster, you’d know exactly what the company does.
A while back I wrote a blog called “Off-the-wall names get people to look twice” and in it, I wrote about a Los Angeles Times article discussing crazy local business names. Two of the funniest and most stand out names were Hammered Liquor and AA Liquor Mart.
Both of the businesses were making 20% of revenue from non-alcohol related merchandise; t-shirts hats and the sort according to the article. Both owners also stated that they’re are doing far better business then even the previous tenants, who were selling the same products within the same retail spot. This would be a great example where a funny business name can work.
Now a funny company name may not work for you. No one wants a funny lawyer, broker or accountant but even some of them could use a cleaver company name. If you’re familiar with this blog, you’ll know that we say over and over again how we love 5 letter company names and 6 letter company names that seemingly have no meaning.
Check out some examples of creative and funny company names:
These business names would work well for some companies and would even make some very good clever or catchy company names. For instance, we like the name “Hegly.” Doesn’t really mean anything and would make a good brokers office. “Hegly Brokerage,” sounds good right?
Ever hear of “hedging” a bet? I know the spelling is off but it might trigger something in the listeners mind and make them associate “hedging” and “Hegly Brokerage.” Not bad when the association when you’re playing the market and don’t want to lose.
Think about what type of company you’re naming and whether it should be a funny company name or a catchy business name but either way it should be a clever name.
