Naming a Restaurant Catchy Restaurant Names

Shakespeare once said “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet.” Well dear old Mr. Shakespeare has been dead for 395 years now and have things changed. While ultimately a successful restaurant comes down to great food and amazing service an instantaneously recognizable name can sure bump your business to the next level.

There are many different ways to create a catchy restaurant names. The first and most obvious is to name it after the owner or the chef.  There are hundreds of restaurants named after their owner.  The first and one of my favorites that comes to mind is Ruth’s Chris Steak House which was founded when Ruth Fertel.  But this interesting restaurant name came about when Ms. Fertel purchased Chris’ Steak house and hence Ruths’ Chris Steakhouse was born.

Thinking about restaurants named after the the Chef (and possibly owner) there are hundreds and hundreds, some of our favorites are Bourdain’s, Daniell’s and Chef Boyardee (ok just kidding on the last one!).

Some Examples of Available Restaurant Names:

This is a quick, and catchy way to name a restaurant particularly if you’re already a celebrity Chef or famous but, where does that leave the rest of us?  Another problem with naming your restaurant after an individual is what if something should happen to that person, be it death, scandal or just really fall out of favor your restaurant may be in real trouble.

Another way to approach naming your restaurant is consider naming it after your regional name for a restaurantspecialty or type of food you server. Think “Lobster Pot” if you are famous for your lobster or seafood in general. Naming your restaurant after a regional specific area “Cajun Wild” if you specialize in Cajun food might be a way to go.

Also consider where your restaurant is going to be located.  For name for a restaurant near a college campusexample, if you’re going to open a cool line of restaurants near college campuses or focusing on college students, some thing like Campus Bistro might be the name for you.

Now don’t forget imaginative or generally catchy restaurant names. “Suzy’s” is cute and there doesn’t’ even need to be a Suzy. How about “Corner Bistro” or “Down the Road Cafe?”

At the end of the day, a catch or interesting name for your restaurant is one that is meaningful to you and one that will catch the eye of your potential customers.  You want your restaurant name to peak someones interest and you need it to be easily communicated and easily remembered.

Recently we’ve come across a very hilarious list of restaurant names that grab attention, some of them might be too risky for our taste but it’s a funny read non-the-less so if you want to check this list on the Delish website, just follow the link.

Lastly, if you’ve seen any cleaver and attention getting restaurant names, please post a link or image below, we’d love to see them!

Thanks for the comment, glad to hear that you’ve found our blog helpful. Your restaurant looks wonderful and hopefully one day the Brandings staff will be able to make it. I’m assuming that O’Brien is a family name and that’s great particularly if you’ve had this restaurant for a while and you have great brand equity built around the name.

Here’s where your name may cause trouble, it’s going to be very difficult to differentiate yourself from other Irish pubs and restaurants. Being of Irish decent and growing up in New York there are quite a few Irish pubs with similar names, how are you to stand out? Perhaps a slight variation on your name like “O B Pub” or something similar.

Thanks again for the comment and please let us know if there is anything else that we can do to help you with the re-branding process. In the meanwhile if you want to take a look at some the available restaurant names in our inventory for some inspiration.

Thanks for the comment. There’s a lot of different thoughts that go into naming your restaurant. As with all with all business names you need to tell the world what kind restaurant you want to be and tout what it is that you do better or why someone should choose your restaurant over the other down the road.

Think, is your restaurant open 24 hours, do you specialize in a specific food, like seafood, meats, or region of the world? Do you cook on an open grill, bake in a stone oven or even have the quickest food in town? Think about why people should choose you.

Have a look at restaurant name ideas, names for a pub, food company name ideas, and you can check them all out under our general food business name ideas. Be sure to check out a few different categories as you never know what name is really going to jump out at you as the “it” restaurant name.

Good luck and please let us know if you would like more help naming your restaurant, we always have custom company naming available.

I want to open a restaurant please suggest me a Sanskrit name with meaning

Thanks for the comment. Dalah which means cotyledon of a pea pod, a type of Indian food might be a good one. We really like the idea of using Sanskrit as a name for a restaurant and particularly an Indian one because there are quite a few words in Hindi which are derived from Sanskrit and more and more people are learning to speak it each year.

At Brandings we have quite a few available names for a restaurant that may work really well for you. I would also like you to check out our expandable names for a business because many of these names are based on non-English words as well. For example Avoxx is based on the Latin Vox which means voice.

So please check out those two areas and check out what a “brandable” business name can do for you.

What are the legalities of using band names, or names of songs for food items?

  13. Brandings
    March 7, 2015 at 12:19 pm

Hi Susan and Steve, There are huge copyright issues for using a song or band name as an item you’re looking to sell. I would be really careful to avoid such an issue. The most famous restaurant involving a song is probably “Cheeseburger in Paradise” but Jimmy Buffett’s company Margaritaville Holdings LLC, has leased the name to the company, thereby allowing them to use the name.

We understand the appeal and the desire of choosing a famous song or band name to represent your product but there are just too many other good alternatives. Please let us know if we can help you name your restaurant or product. Best of luck to you.

Unless you have clearly expressed permission

Hey Darlene, thanks for the comment but this blog is really dedicated not to earning money but on helping people find the best names for their business or products. This particular blog post you’re commenting on is specifically dedicated to naming a restaurant and helping people find available names for their new restaurant.

You want your name to catch and stand out but there are so many hang ups with food you have to careful and that’s what this blog is about.

So thank you for the comment and thank you for thinking about us but we’re just going to keep on preaching about how important your business name is and helping people get the best name for their business be it a restaurant or something else entirely.

Thanks for thinking about us and best of luck to you though!

I want to open fast food corner and the menu are pizza, sandwich, juice etc. So plz help me for naming my shop.

Hi Shweta, thank you for your question. There’s a lot to consider when naming a restaurant. It doesn’t matter whether your restaurant is a fast food corner shop or a 5 Star Michelin restaurant you want your restaurant name to describe what kind of restaurant yours is, stand out among your competition and you want to tell people why your potential customers should choose you over others.

With all of that said and knowing very little about your restaurant and your plans for the future, there are a few things that we can recommend:

    1) If you don’t want to expand, consider incorporating the name of your town, street or area where your restaurant is.

    2) You say your restaurant is fast, consider incorporating that word “fast” or similar words such as quick, speedy, rapid or other words that say that into your name.

    3) You might want to think about incorporating the types of food that you serve into your name. For example “The Corner Shop,” “Corner Pizza,” ect.

    4) Lastly, check out some of the business names and restaurant names that we’ve developed as examples for what you want your name to look like. If you want to see examples of business names that say fast and rapid, just follow the link and if you want to names for a local restaurant or interesting names for a restaurant, check out those links.

We hope that this helps and we wish you the best of luck in your new venture!
